What is audio multitrack recording?

The process of recording multitrack sounds is that we divide the music into bits (bass, drums, vocals, instruments, etc.) so we can individually change, manipulate and control each partys sound, volume and location in a ready-made mix.

Recording on multiple tracks used to be achieved mechanically by recording 1 and 2 bands that were striped in sixteen or twenty four separate tracks.

Modern multitrack recording is achieved in the digital and virtual environment of recording software.

Recording Multitrack Sounds - There are only 3 goals that matter

Clear sound

Easy-to-use tools and recording software

Everyone guesses the first of these goals, but surprisingly they often stumble as they try to express what the two closest goals for an indie recording musician should be.

I suppose its not surprising because musicians are conditioned to assume that high quality home recording requires complicated and expensive studio equipment. In other words, instead of first learning about sound and what it takes to record it effectively, they invest money first and assume they will be saved by their machines.

If musicians and ambitious recording artists knew how simple the requirements are to record professional sound, they would realize that good sound can be achieved with much less economic burden.

Recording Multitrack at Home - How to Control Your Recording Future

We use multitrack recording to give us increased control over our music. It is therefore ironic that we actually have less control if we do not know how to use our own recording software and equipment.

The solution to take control of the recording process is obvious, but mostly overlooked. The answer is that we need to reduce the learning curve by using smaller multitrack digital recording equipment and our goal must be easy to use. In fact, we must consistently produce high-quality recordings on demand, in the long run. Therefore, aspiring recording artists should not remain financially short-term.

Recording multitrack sounds at home professionally, easily and cheaply

Recording professional quality records at home is more than possible, it should be expected. The simple fact is that all multitrack recording software available is more than capable of managing the task of recording quality quality.

The key is to give the multitrack software the most needed:

Professional quality sound

High quality catch

Good quality input

Excellent quality

Here are the 4 pillars of a good multitrack recording. The good news is that we can achieve each product cheap and very little technical knowledge.

Lets define how to achieve each object:

High quality sound:

High quality sound basically means delivering good performance, acoustic or electrical instruments of good quality, or electronic instruments or units of good quality or a combination of the above. In other words, well played with no buzzing, clicking and hoaxing.

Can we achieve this cheaply and easily? Yes.

High quality catch

High quality capture means using a good quality microphone for voice and audio instruments and good quality cables for connecting electrical and electronic instruments and devices. In other words, early loss of quality and damage to source noise is avoided due to poor quality microphones and unsafe cables.

Can we achieve this cheaply and easily? Yes. Cables are cheap and there are very good microphones available that are affordable.

High quality input

High-quality input for multitrack digital recording, refers to using a high-quality in-device, also known as a digital audio interface. The first step to having high quality input is to avoid using the computers built-in sound card for recording purposes.

Easy-to-use, professional-quality external audio interfaces are available. Their only purpose is to provide a high quality way for your outside sound from your computer to the inside of your computer without compromising the quality of the audio.

Can we achieve this cheaply and easily? Yes.

High quality production

Even though our audio in-out device also delivers the output, our ability to actually hear our well-recorded audio depends on our speakers (monitors).

There are excellent recording studios for home recording, but its an area where we need to make a moderate investment to achieve professional recordings at home.

Conclusion of the first part.

In the continuation of this article on recording multitrack sounds at home, we are looking to manipulate our different sounds in the multitrack digital recording programs themselves.
